Red Sandalwood Marble Mosaic Tiles - Wood-Grain Stone in Decorative Formats

Red Sandalwood (紫檀金沙) marble mosaic tiles bring the stone's distinctive wood-grain character—overlapping purple tones crossed by diagonal light grey bold stripe veins—into decorative wall and floor formats that full slabs cannot achieve. Where a polished slab showcases the continuous grain pattern, mosaics fragment that pattern into individual tesserae, creating a textured, multi-dimensional surface that catches light at every angle. Apexstone cuts and assembles each mosaic sheet from select Red Sandalwood blocks at our Shuitou factory, offering 3D, basketweave, cubic, and splitting face formats for feature walls, bathroom accent panels, kitchen backsplashes, and decorative floor inlays.ays.

Red Sandalwood Marble 3D mosaic tiles with wood-grain pattern

Red Sandalwood 3D mosaic tiles — the three-dimensional surface amplifies the wood-grain vein pattern, creating shadow lines that shift with the light source.

Why Mosaic? The Design Problem Full Slabs Cannot Solve

Full-size Red Sandalwood slabs (up to 3000 x 1800 mm / 118 x 71 inch) are ideal for large feature walls and countertops, but many interior surfaces demand smaller formats: a powder room accent wall behind a vessel sink, a kitchen backsplash between the benchtop and upper cabinets, a shower niche surround, or a decorative floor medallion border. These applications require tiles that are easy to handle, cut, and install in tight spaces—while still showcasing the stone's purple wood-grain character.ter.

Mosaic tiles solve this by cutting the slab into small tesserae (typically 10 x 10 mm to 100 x 100 mm / 3/8 x 3/8 inch to 4 x 4 inch) and mounting them on mesh sheets (usually 300 x 300 mm / 12 x 12 inch) for rapid installation. The individual pieces can be arranged in geometric patterns—3D, basketweave, cubic, splitting face—that create visual texture impossible to achieve with a flat slab.

3D Mosaic Tiles

The 3D mosaic format cuts Red Sandalwood marble into three-dimensional tesserae with angled faces that catch light from multiple directions. When installed on a feature wall, the surface appears to ripple and shift as the viewer moves—a dynamic effect that no flat tile or slab can replicate. The purple base with diagonal grey stripe veining amplifies this effect, as each angled face reveals a different cross-section of the wood-grain pattern.

Red Sandalwood Marble basketweave mosaic tiles

Basketweave mosaic format — the classic pattern reinterpreted in purple Red Sandalwood marble with wood-grain veining.

Basketweave Mosaic Tiles

The basketweave pattern interlocks rectangular and square tesserae in a woven layout that adds formal geometry to the stone's organic wood-grain pattern. This format is particularly effective for traditional and transitional interiors where the Red Sandalwood's historical temperament is at home—Neo-Classical bathrooms, European Classic foyers, and Traditional Chinese tea rooms. Available on 300 x 300 mm (12 x 12 inch) mesh sheets with individual tesserae approximately 25 x 50 mm (1 x 2 inch).2 inch).

Cubic & Splitting Face Mosaicsaics

For textured wall surfaces, the cubic and splitting face formats offer a rugged, architectural quality. Cubic mosaics mount individual stone cubes (approximately 20 x 20 x 10 mm / 3/4 x 3/4 x 3/8 inch) in grid patterns, creating a pixelated wood-grain effect across the wall. Splitting face mosaics use natural-cleft tesserae with irregular, rough-hewn surfaces that emphasize the raw stone texture—ideal for accent walls in lobbies, reception areas, and feature columns where tactile contrast matters.

Applications: Where Red Sandalwood Mosaics Belong

Bathroom Feature Walls & Shower Nichesches — The 3D and basketweave formats are ideal for bathroom accent walls behind vessel sinks, bathtub surrounds, and shower niche borders. The purple wood-grain character adds warmth to wet-area surfaces that would feel cold in white or grey marble. Sealing is required for all wet-area mosaic installations.

Red Sandalwood Marble accent wall showing full wood-grain pattern

Accent wall installation — the full wood-grain pattern is visible across the mosaic surface.

Kitchen Backsplashes — Red Sandalwood basketweave mosaics create a warm, textured backsplash behind cooktops and sinks. The mesh-mounted sheets install quickly over standard cement board, and the purple tone complements both light and dark cabinetry. Matching Red Sandalwood slab benchtops can be supplied for a coordinated benchtop-and-backsplash package.

Red Sandalwood Marble backsplash installation

Backsplash installation — the basketweave pattern creates a textured surface behind the benchtop.

Decorative Floor Inlays & Bordersders — Cubic and splitting face mosaics can be set into polished marble or engineered stone floors as decorative borders, medallion frames, or feature strips. The textured mosaic surface contrasts with the surrounding polished floor, creating a visual and tactile transition between zones.

Mosaic Cutting & Assembly Processcess

Each Red Sandalwood mosaic sheet is cut and assembled at our Shuitou factory. The process begins with slab selection—blocks are chosen for purple colour saturation and consistent diagonal stripe veining—then cut into thin tiles on gang-saws and CNC bridge saws. Individual tesserae are shaped (3D angled, basketweave rectangular, cubic, or splitting face) using specialized cutting and splitting tools, then hand-mounted on fiberglass mesh sheets for installation-ready delivery.

Technical Specifications

Red Sandalwood marble has a density of 2.6-2.8 g/cm³, water absorption below 0.5%, and Mohs hardness of 3-4. Mosaic tesserae are typically 8-10 mm (5/16-3/8 inch) thick. Mesh sheet size: 300 x 300 mm (12 x 12 inch). Available finishes: polished (3D, basketweave, cubic), splitting face (natural cleft, unpolished). All mosaic installations require sealing with penetrating stone sealer before and after grouting.
