What Makes Onyx Different from Marble?
Onyx is a cryptocrystalline quartz-family stone formed in mineral springs, giving it a denser, more uniform structure than marble or limestone. Its defining characteristic is translucency: light passes through the slab at thicknesses of 10-20 mm (3/8-3/4 inch), making it the only natural stone suitable for backlit installations. Green Onyx from Iran is among the most sought-after varieties, with a saturated green body colour ranging from deep forest to bright emerald, crossed by white, gold, and brown vein bands that create natural landscape-like patterns.
Onyx typically has a density of 2.5-2.7 g/cm³, water absorption below 0.5%, and Mohs hardness of 6-7, placing it harder than marble (3-4) and comparable to granite. The slabs are then dried, inspected for fractures and colour consistency, and processed through polishing lines to achieve a high-gloss finish that maximises translucency. For backlit applications, slabs can be calibrated to 10 mm (3/8 inch) or 15 mm (5/8 inch) thickness to optimise light transmission without sacrificing structural integrity.
