When a Wall Becomes a Lamp: Specifying Onyx for Residential Light

A backlit Green Onyx feature wall is the only surface in a home that is also a light source. When the LED panels behind the stone turn on, the room's entire lighting environment changes - the wall glows, the ceiling picks up reflected green, and furniture silhouettes shift against the luminous backdrop. This is not a wall you specify and forget. It is a lighting installation that happens to be made of stone, and it requires the same level of engineering attention as a custom lighting fixture.

Iranian Green Onyx is the material of choice because its cryptocrystalline quartz structure transmits light uniformly at 10-20 mm (3/8-3/4 inch) thickness - a property no marble, granite, or limestone possesses. The green body colour comes from copper and chromium compounds deposited by mineral springs in Kerman and Yazd provinces. The white, gold, and brown vein bands are calcite and aragonite layers that formed during pauses in the silica deposition. When backlit, these bands appear to float in three dimensions within the translucent green body. Apexstone sources blocks directly from Iranian quarry partners, tests each slab on a light box for uniform translucency, and precision-cuts panels in our Xiamen facility. How LED Colour Temperature Changes the Stone You Chose

The same Green Onyx slab looks like two different stones depending on the LED behind it. At 2700K (warm white), the gold and brown mineral veins dominate - the wall glows amber-green, reading as traditional luxury. At 4000K (neutral white), the green body colour saturates and the wall reads as vivid emerald - contemporary, almost electric. At 5000K+ (cool white), the stone washes out and looks like tinted glass. We recommend dimmable 2700-3000K drivers so the homeowner can shift the mood from daytime brightness to evening intimacy without changing the stone.

Why 15 mm Is the Sweet Spot (and When to Break the Rule)

Panel thickness is not a structural decision for onyx - it is an optical one. At 10 mm (3/8 inch), the stone transmits maximum light: the wall blazes, but every vein line and micro-fracture becomes visible. At 20 mm (3/4 inch), translucency drops by roughly 60%: the stone reads as solid green with a faint glow at the edges. At 15 mm (5/8 inch), you get even light transmission, sufficient structural integrity for panels up to 3000x1800 mm (118x71 inch), and the vein pattern appears to float within the stone rather than sitting on the surface. Use 10 mm only for small accent panels (under 600x600 mm / 24x24 inch) fully supported by a backing substrate. Use 20 mm when the onyx is a bar top or reception counter that people will lean on.

The Access Panel Nobody Wants to Talk About

An LED module will fail before the stone does. LED panels rated for 50,000 hours will, eventually, need replacement. If the onyx wall is sealed with no access panel, replacing a single LED strip means dismantling the entire wall - stone, frame, wiring, and all. Every backlit onyx wall must include a removable access panel: minimum 300x300 mm (12x12 inch), positioned at a discreet location (behind a sofa, above a doorframe, inside an adjacent cabinet). The panel frame should be designed by the lighting contractor, not the stone fabricator, because the lighting contractor owns the maintenance lifecycle.

Book-Matching: When It Matters and When It Wastes Money

Book-matching mirrors adjacent slabs from the same block to create a symmetrical vein composition. For a living room feature wall wider than 1800 mm (71 inch), book-matching is worth the premium - the mirrored pattern creates a deliberate, architectural moment that reads as intentional design. For a narrow entryway accent wall (under 1200 mm / 47 inch), book-matching is invisible because only one slab is visible. For a bedroom headboard wall, book-matching can create an unsettling mirror effect at eye level when reclining. Specify book-matching for wide, prominent walls; skip it for narrow or intimate installations.

Our Process

The Homeowner's Decision Sequence: From Light Box to Installation

A backlit onyx wall involves three contractors - stone fabricator, lighting designer, and electrician - working from a shared set of drawings. The sequence below is the homeowner's decision workflow, not the factory production workflow. Each step requires a decision that affects the next contractor's work.

  • Step 1: See the Stone on a Light Box

    Before selecting a slab, request a light box photograph or video. A premium-grade onyx shows uniform green transmission across the entire panel. Dark spots indicate dense mineral zones that will not glow. If the supplier cannot provide a light box image, do not commit to a backlit programme.

  • Step 2: Choose Thickness Based on the Mood You Want

    Decide whether the wall should blaze (10 mm / 3/8 inch), glow evenly (15 mm / 5/8 inch), or read as solid green with a faint edge glow (20 mm / 3/4 inch). This decision drives the slab cutting, the LED spacing, and the frame depth. Changing thickness after fabrication has started is not possible.

  • Step 3: Specify the LED System Before the Stone Is Cut

    The lighting designer specifies LED panel type (24V constant-voltage recommended), colour temperature (2700-3000K warm white), wattage, IP rating (IP44 for dry walls, IP67 for bathroom or spa areas), and dimmable driver location. The stone fabricator needs these specs to calculate the cavity depth and panel dimensions. If the LED system is unspecified when the stone is cut, the wall will be built to fit the stone, not the lighting - and the result is usually uneven illumination.

  • Step 4: Plan the Access Panel Location

    Identify where the removable access panel will go before the wall frame is built. The access panel must be at least 300x300 mm (12x12 inch) and positioned where it will not be visible during normal use. The electrician needs this location to route wiring. The stone fabricator needs it to avoid cutting stone panels across the access opening.

  • Step 5: Final Slab Selection and Book-Match Sequencing

    Once thickness, LED system, and access panel are specified, the final slabs are selected and sequenced. For book-matched walls, slabs are cut from the same block and numbered so the installer mirrors them across the centre seam. Apexstone provides slab sequence diagrams with each shipment.
